More than just a case of chronic tightness of the leg muscles, hamstring syndrome occurs when tissues bunch up and form hard, fibrous bands where both the hamstring muscles and the sciatic nerve insert into the "sit bones.". The patient will be instructed in sitting on a wedge with the thicker side of the wedge under the sit bones. Be sure to stretch both legs evenly to avoid future injury. In severe cases, both may be present. This condition can cause pain in the hip and buttock and sometimes numbness down the back of the leg. As the patient makes improvement, they should be able to straighten the knee completely without symptoms and at increased hip flexion angles that are produced by increasing the number of pillows. Sciatic nerve mobilization “encourages” the nerve back into more appropriate gliding as the hamstring is engaged and then relaxed. Hamstring tendinitis is treated by gentle stretching to relieve tension, cross friction massage to the tendons to stimulate healing, and  strengthening of the lower extremities to address any weakness or muscular imbalances.
