A pure delight! i quite understand why producers want to crow-bar miss marple into non specific novels, but why take one of the most charming and lovable characters and turn them into the villain? It was clearly written with a lighthearted mood, and should be read in the same spirit for maximum enjoyment. Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2020. Inspector Finch of Scotland Yard is soon on the case, assisted by Miss Marple. Paperback. Out of these well-worn parts, Christie melds a lively story, playful, tongue in cheek, suspenseful, romantic, adventurous and just plain fun. This apparently loose adaptation of one of Agatha Christie's relatively obscure novels is one of this TV series' best entries, and one of the few that can rival in intricacy and complexity even the best Hercule Poirot stories. My rating: 6/10 Setting: Briefly in Africa, with most of the action taking place in the stately English country house, “Chimneys”. I had too many false clues-so many things to unravel…”. While there is only Inspector Battle, not Poirot, Miss Marple,or Tuppence, it moves along quite nicely. Charlotte Salt was also quite charming as Virginia Revel. The answer is yes, The production qualities are high, the cast is talented, the direction and camera work are good, and if some of the characters seem exaggerated or cartoonish, see their portrayal as a kind of shorthand, or Balzacian types, rather than clichés or stereotypes. The Secret of Chimneys Review As it is it is fine, the plot is pretty good, however if you expect it to have any similarity with Agatha Christie's story then you will be disappointed and confused. Probably my biggest quibble with the book is that Superintendent Battle (the namesake of the series) is about as exciting as a rock.

The question is: "is it a viable alternative to the (poor) special-effects laden, mindless, artless, politically-correct-governed, committee-written trash on American television?" You can still see all customer reviews for the product. An event at the estate 23 years earlier may have a very large bearing on the case. "The Secret of Chimneys" as a novel involves quite a lot of plot lines, but it doesn't involve Miss Marple. This is so good on so many levels, the location, the wonderful all start cast of so many brilliant artists the filming and direction, costumes the score, attention to detail and then the whole thing is wrecked by post editing... Not a single scene or shot isn't edited to be on screen for more than 1-3 seconds creating a strobing effect that complete ruins the whole production.

Only the best narrators can "do" all the voices both distinctly and convincingly, especially the opposite sex.
Plot wise, this book is okay.

Virtually nobody is who they are supposed to be and the plot is almost too involved to explain. This TV movie may be acceptable to those who have never read Christie but time would be better spent, I think, in reading the book that has a much better plot and more satisfactory conclusion. Starting a drama with a bit of Strauss (Wiener Bonbons) is never a bad idea, it sets the tone. Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2019. Great Story and Superintendent Battle Is A Great Character! This is awful! Miss Marple, who does not figure in the original, has been added to the cast and has surprisingly become the antithesis of the clever old woman that Christie invented. I considered giving an example here --- there are many! This silly mish-mash borrows the title and the names of some of the characters of the Christie novel of the same name.

People tend to rate Chimneys poorly, and Dame Agatha certainly wrote better books, but I love the book and it's fun, at least as much fun as her other thrillers, such as the man in the brown suit. I doubt that you will guess whodunnit, and even if you do, there are still more secrets to be revealed at chimneys. Just a terrible person. It is an excellent example of the old truism that " it ain't what you do, it's the way that you do it". How could you do it to that wonderful old man? He might have 20 lines in the book and does almost nothing. Read 1,072 reviews from the world's largest community for readers. This involves anything from politics to murder to espionage and theft. This unabridged audio version is wonderful, read by the excellent Hugh Fraser with just the right light touch. I love this story - the TV show is unrecognisable. The novel is in many ways a typical country house farce, involving many aliases, royalty, blackmail, secret assignations, jewel thieves, murder and general confusion. It's a fun romp of a book, but I hesitate to actually call it a mystery. Be prepared for Dame Agathas FIRST effort, Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2020. The elements of the story were, in her era, commonplace in novels, both serious and humorous, mystery and adventure: the hero of mysterious origins who gets a kick out of danger, the lovely ladies, each adored by multiple admirers, the beleaguered Master of the House, a murder or two to spice the story, strange foreigners who are up to no good, stiff necked officials, a solid representative of law and order who must be avoided if possible, and others too humorous to mention (sic!). Whilst I enjoyed this book, I did find it more of a complex read than the more well known books I've read of hers. She reveals so much more about her characters than can be shown on film, and some of her characters are cut out of the story altogether on film! And it didn't work very well. --- but prefer not to immortalize such stuff in print any further than the novel has already. But that does not mean one should completely dismiss the movie. Most of Agatha Christie's stories have been made into movies or t.v. Once again, the producers have royally messed with a decent Agatha Christie novel. 223 pages. There are lots of little details that are designed to delight mystery fans (the light in the window, the smoke from the chimney, the gunshot, the coded message, the handwriting, 11:45 sharp, etc.) While there, the Lomaxes are visited by Count Ludwig Von Stainach. A wonderful read from the queen of mystery writing. Agatha Christie's "The Secret of Chimneys" is one of her earlier works (published in 1925) and is the first in her "Superintendent Battle" series. "Rich young things running around in grand English gardens.". "THE SECRET OF CHIMNEYS" (2010) Review Anyone who has read Agatha Christie's 1925 novel, "The Secret of Chimneys", will be disappointed by the 2010 television adaptation that stars Julia McKenzie as Miss Jane Marple.
