I developed some concerns pre-show as my companion for the evening was my very sleepy partner who’s bedtime is strictly at 8:30pm, as in, wherever he is at 8:30pm, he WILL fall asleep (the comfortable velvet chairs of His Majesty’s definitely didn’t help the situation!). There was something very special about the experience of watching Cloudstreet in Perth. Cloudstreet is a key piece of Australian literature. Stage and costume designer Zoe Atkinson, lighting designer Paul Jackson and sound designer J. David Franzke are to be commended for making this more tasteful than it sounds, with the flashy production creating emphasis rather than generating the drama itself.

The Pickles family, steeped in drink, sex and gambling, inherit the place – a former mission house for First Nations girls – and, forbidden from selling it for 20 years, they move down from Geraldton to live there. Friday night I was lucky enough to see the stage adaptation of Tim Winton’s 1991 novel Cloudstreet, reimagined for Perth Festival under the direction of Matthew Lutton.
Alison Whyte and Greg Stone embody Oriel and Lester Lamb with similar conviction, while Natasha Herbert’s Dolly Pickles fills up the whole stage. I highly recommend getting along to see it if you can! Brothers Quick (Keegan Joyce) and Fish Lamb fail to connect onstage, and the relationship disintegrates from tender, unconditional love into reluctant babysitting.
Lots of water. Picking favourites would be a futile exercise, but special mention must be given to the actors at the plot’s emotional core: Fish and Quick Lamb (Benjamin Oakes and Keegan Joyce, respectively). The audience have only just realised Quick Lamb is on stage before he’s half gutted by a roo, or nearly hit by a train.

The Pickles and Lambs have never felt more tangible than in this production; it really felt like all twenty years of plot was being broadcasted before your eyes. The iconic, exquisite moment of Quick and Fish Lamb in the rowboat in the river – stars and water melding until the characters seem to be soaring through space – starts beautifully enough: real water seeps up through the floorboards while Paul Jackson’s lights marble off it onto Zoe Atkinson’s (otherwise fairly drab) set. At the time, I had lived in Perth for less than two years, I was still discovering the city. It was real, honest, compelling theatre. Admirably, the script is spruced with diversity, including an emphasis on the Indigenous aspects of the story, the addition of Noongar language, and the inclusion of a culturally and neurologically diverse cast.
