I use to watch Poirot with pleasure until I started to read the books writen by Agatha Christie. An opportunity missed and for the most part just two women who happen to be on the same tour. The whole film was very good and all Agatha Christie fans have to watch it! The music is gorgeous throughout, really good, it's a visual treat too, the scenery is stunning, the big scale big budget feel works so well here, has a more grown up feel then say Murder in Mesopotamia. The novel 'Appointment With Death' is quite a simple story and the solution is not (IMO) one of Christie's best.

When Christie transferred the novel to the stage ,she changed culprits and made Lady Welstholm the comical character of her play. The film sets the record straight :it follows the book quite well.

the story isnt as good as evil under the sun or death on the nile however it is interesting enough to watch.the sorely underused carrie fisher is good in this a small role for david soul who i met once in Hull about 1980.not a typical Michael Winner film though in fairness he has had that Death wish tag for too long.needless to say it isnt overlong thanks to tight editing from Arnold crust Winner himself. In the book she was an ex-prison wardress, used to punishing and being in control; her children felt trapped by her constant presence but it was this past life that led the killer to kill.

IMDB: 6.2. This version was brash, full of pantomime characters (the wicked white-slaver nun, the fat husband, the nanny)and often horrible to watch (the child abuse, Mrs Boynton sun burning to death). Sir John Gielgud is a treasure to watch and Lauren Bacall is incredibly good as Lady Westholme. She bullies her three adopted children, Carol, Jinny and Raymond, as well as the family's nanny. is even more unfaithful than that. In Jerusalem, Hercule Poirot (Sir Peter Ustinov) meets up with a woman friend, Dr. Sarah King (Jenny Seagrove), who falls in love with Raymond Boynton (John Terleskey) to Emily's disapproval. Do not listen to favorable comments about scenery, or actors or such. I've had a great time watching these with friends and family and all of Ustinov's Poirot movies are worth watching and re-watching. Whereas most of the Ustinov-Poirot films tend to be a bit dry and long, "Appointment with Death" is quite breezy and whisps us along a plot that has by now become way too familiar.

It has humor, great performances and Peter Ustinov- Just wish it was purchasable somewhere!! STANDS4 LLC, 2020. Do not look for character development, or for plot. Check out some of the IMDb editors' favorites movies and shows to round out your Watchlist. Just give this awkward mess of a film a miss. I'm not saying bring back Hastings et al just make it good drama again - these stories have been popular the world over for years and years - why change them? In the book, she is a bit of a tyrant, in the adaptation, she was portrayed as nasty and cantankerous, but lacked the depth of the character in the book. He has invited a large group of people to visit his camp, including his unpleasant, domineering wife and her three adopted children. The plot itself is not among Christie's strongest, though co-screenwriter Anthony Shaffer at least tries to mix it up a little with some interesting ideas (Poirot assembles all the suspects for the first time, we expect him to reveal the murderer....and he doesn't). Watched this extravagant production last night and wept! What are the Poirot writer's up to? Altought the movie is very enjoyable. The much underrated Michael Craig also puts in an appearance. The story is not one of Christie's best, and I feel that some of the changes they made greatly benefited the story, an average novel is made into a very good drama.I wasn't overly fussed on Tim Curry in this, I found him a little bit over the top, I had a huge difficulty believing in any kind of relationship being possible between Campbell and Curry's characters.

Although David Suchet, in his series and films makes a very impressive Hercule Poirot, Peter Ustinov creates a far more real character and is a superb actor. Without the humor and eccentric performances there would have been little here to warrant a film. The plot moves along at a good pace, and features beautiful locations. #1930to2020

Even though Agatha Christie says she pictured Poirot more like Albert Finney in Murder On The Orient Express, Ustinov is much less annoying and a lot more fun. A splendid cast, a brilliant original author and stunning scenery. Appointment with Death is a 1988 American mystery film produced and directed by Michael Winner.Made by Golan-Globus Productions, the film is an adaptation of the 1938 Agatha Christie novel Appointment with Death featuring the detective Hercule Poirot. The screenplay was by Peter Buckman, Anthony Shaffer and Michael Winner. All this is such a muddle that it takes Poirot almost 15 minutes to explain the answer, which is not enough. The impression left is that the re-write team decided to throw in a little something for everybody - the Baptist for the religious, a peer for N American snobs, beatings for the sado-masochists, love interest for the damp handkerchief brigade, and plenty of drugs for all and sundry. Lady Westholme had everything to lose but here she was a revenging mother who worked with her lover Dr Gerard. The movie has a top grade cast (for the most part) including Peter Ustinov, Lauren Bacall, Piper Laurie & Hayley Mills. Keep track of everything you watch; tell your friends. Web. As a fan of David Suchet's portrayal of Poirot, I had been looking forward to seeing him in Appointment With Death--only to be hugely disappointed with the whole thing.

The arrogance and incompetence of those screen writers who dare maim the work of Agatha Christie is staggering. And, the original fiction is really thriller-like. 8/10. I'm sure Peter Ustinov probably could have done others. . Episode cast overview, first billed only: Concierge "A gift" he tells one of the suspects. This version tries to cram a much more complicated plot and more characters (notably Lord Boynton, someone superfluous to requirements if ever there was one) into a little over an hour of screen time. Mark Gatiss had some very humorous lines, I'm sure some feel Poirot has no place for humour, but I appreciated it. What purpose does Nanny Taylor serve? The best of the series are the two earliest -- "Murder on the Orient Express" and "Death on the Nile."

The same applies for the recent David Suchet version(which was more unfaithful but better musically and visually, and the acting was more solid in that one too), the character of Mrs Boynton was never done quite right, despite the wholly hateable portrayal given by Piper Laurie.

I still watch Poiroit, mostly because of David Suschet, but when I see the discrepancy betwen book and movie,I can't remain disappointed. Looking for some great streaming picks?

NOt a thing for a true Christie's fan. Ustinov perhaps does a little less sleuthing here than usual and is really not much more than an excuse for the film to be made. The Pleasance presence was good for a laugh-straight out of a Hammer Horror as a bewildered guilt-ridden "nanny".Got to say,she looked good in the bath!

However, the script isn't that polished, a lot is changed from the book and some of the changes are underdeveloped, the character of Hassan was unnecessary. Where this book scores is in its picturesque setting (the rose red city of Petra) and in the character of the victim, Mrs Emily Boynton - an extraordinary creation who remains in the imagination long after the book is over.

I wish there could be more appointments with such a talented cast. Lady Westholme (Lauren Bacall), her secretary, and Cope are following them too. When Mrs. Boynton is found murdered, there is certainly no shortage of suspects, as everyone except her husband hated her. The solution to the murder of evil mother Laurie isn't an easy one, but it all makes sense in the end. Carrie Fisher excels and moves on from the Starwars era, to her advantage. Lauren Bacall is an American who gives as good as she gets.

Am I the only viewer to "fall in love with" Amber Bezer? I've heard David Suchet has "found religion" is recent years, which is great if that's what floats his boat, but that does NOT mean they should also have a classic character find religion as well. But the place. Only his Lordship has any love for his wife so that, when she is found stabbed to death one blisteringly hot afternoon, Poirot has more than his fair share of suspects to interrogate. While accompanying her husband on an archaeological dig, the abusive and overbearing Lady Boynton is found stabbed to death. Peter Ustinov is the best Poirot since Poirot has been on film. Does Suchet cringe when he watches "the rushes"? I nearly spit my dinner out when I was watching the recent Murder on the Orient Express and saw him on his knees, praying!! Oh dear. Michael Winner seems to have concentrated so much on location and period that he forgot about the performances. I also preferred it over the adaptation of Murder of Roger Ackroyd, that was a real disappointment. There is a good cast and the sets, costumes, and locations are wonderful. Albert Finney did it good, David Suchet did disgustingly and Peter Ustinov did it amazing.

Poirot is (naturally) on hand to find the order in things and uncover a killer. Syria 1937. 2020. 14 of 23 people found this review helpful. 1988: Appointment with Death d #MichaelWinner #PeterUstinov last turn as #Poirot & he’s a fab as ever, as is the starry cast around him: #LaurenBacall #CarrieFisher #JohnGielgud et al. Well just about everything. I totally concur with the reviewer who wondered why Poirot has suddenly found religion.

Ustinov is still delightful, and occasionally laugh-out-loud funny, as Poirot; he reminds me in a way of Roger Moore's James Bond: purists argue that these two are not 105% accurate to the books, but I'm having too much fun watching them to care.

The cast is semi starry this time and, unlike the TV movies, Poirot is now back in period...almost - the theme music is very eighties!

Poirot is analytical, not religious. , can he find the guilty? Peter Ustinov's Hercule Poirot returns to it's big screen roots with lavish travelogue scenery and a roster of legendary stars. Reviews: Appointment with Death. roll on "Curtain" :-)Trevor. OH dear. The opening scene was superb by the way, and the ending with Poirot and Jinny was quite moving. The costumes were lovely too, and the script while bearing little resemblance to the book is not so bad.

Particularly because of the quality of the cast and their impressive portrayal of the characters. Do Christie aficionado's recognize the story?
