Lets get back to the interview I recorded last week with singer, songwriter and fiddle player Amanda Shires. Since publishing my op-ed, Ive heard from some folks who are in their eighties. Oh, I could have crowed. In 2020, The Highwomen won Album of the Year at the Americana Music Honors and Awards ceremony. Since starting I So Lounging, Shires YouTube following has grown 300 percent. Her study essentially proves that when folks cant have an abortion, it affects their mental health, their economic standing, their overall well-being. Weve had legal abortions for 50 years and now, suddenly, a long-held right will be illegal. They might not have had a voice before or might have been cast out into the streets without any place to sleep had they mentioned it earlier in their lives. And it was much safer for us to sleep in the closet with the TV at the bail bonding place than to be left to her own devices at home. And that, to me, was incredible, because they had abortions in what was a pre-Roe v. Wade environment and theyre only now sharing their stories for the first time. So when I would write the songs, I dont know whats going to come out, but sometimes, it was so I was just so down that the only way I could get better was to take it out on writing a song. Then her character takes control of the exchange in a teasing tone. GROSS: Well, would you play Take It Like A Man for us? Ive found and scrounged and continued to for every interview that hes done in any form and any language. You used to lean in like I was whispering, any excuse to get near again. And this is basically, like, a country supergroup. We found music, and then being in the Shoals area just gave us an early look at all the places music can take you. And then it was never like, oh, they have to be on a record once I do record them. So by the time I went into the hospital, my fallopian tube had already ruptured. SHIRES: No, not until a couple of years ago. Dont support artists who dont support your rights. We found all this out afterwards. And I remember the first time I sang ever, Leon Rausch had to hold my hand. When the band step back from their microphones to begin the extended breakdown, Isbell smiles like a boy on a great adventure. GROSS: So you ended up, like, accompanying him. McWhorter, who had played fiddle in Bob Wills band, became her teacher, and when Shires was just 15, he asked her to join The Texas Playboys. I mean, many songwriters would say, oh, theyre not about me. In the first half of the 20th century citizens from every walk of life gathered at the Ryman to enjoy the greatest preachers, entertainers, speakers and politicians of the day. Isbells grandfather and uncle were both musicians, says Tompkins on the phone from Nashville. GROSS: Lets take another break here. I like the way these lines kind of happened in our lives and like tributaries in a way that we dont realize are happening. It sounds like you were about to leave the marriage. He asserted that the band would cancel the concert if any venue refused to agree to their requirements. Theres still just as much awe.. It's a sentiment that Shires has echoed many times since. What happened between now and then? Upcoming Dates Past Fellow singer/songwriter Aimee Mann tweeted well wishes to Isbell: Im so sorry. It was love at first listen. And he said, well, you can always put it on there and just choose not to answer questions about it and, you know or you can he was pushing for me to leave Fault Lines on there because it is a good song, as he said. And how come you didnt know before? GROSS: I think its time for another break. ISBELL: (Singing) And all I could think to say was. You can just say Im crazy.
