2/10 for the production values and the acting.

Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2018. Book Review of The Sittaford Mystery by Agatha Christie. Here are only a few points: Despite how annoyed I was at the multitude of changes in this adaption, I have to admit to rather liking it in a way. I've never read more than a couple of chapters of an Agatha Christie mystery, and I never intend to. | Homosexual elements that never existed in the books are added in for no apparent reason (usually as the guilty party.) **1/2 out of 4. But I have never read it, so I saw no point in making any comparisons. For anyone who based their judgement on Christie on the adaptations would decide she had no sense of place, no sense of plot and no sense of dialogue. Kitsch, camp and ridiculous. Though Timothy Dalton is a compelling actor, his failure to be murdered until halfway through was considerably strange (especially as his character died n the first chapter of the book) There were strange unanswered questions, and a very confusing end shot which had Trevelyan returning from the dead after his murderer had been revealed- all in all, this was a very disappointing adaptation of the novel, and a disappointing mystery at that. I found it so contrived, for it came out of left field with no set up or hint whatsoever. There are far too many changes here - other reviewers have listed them and I'm not going to repeat them. Calling it utter crap is being needlessly unkind to the brown stuff. The only similarity between The Sittaford Mystery and the book of the same name is that several character names have been retained - not alas Miss Jane Marple. She certainly kept me guessing, and I felt the book stood the test of time despite outdated words and phrases like "Hark!" Did anyone in the production team read the book? Homosexual elements that never existed in the books are added in for no apparent reason (usually as the guilty party.) One of Christie's better, but not her best, plot. The Sittaford Mystery is one of those classic mystery stories - isolated community, a hint of the paranormal, legacies, prodigal relatives, all given a strong sense of location by being tied in with the Dartmoor landscape.

The problem for me is that changes made to all the other episodes in the series have nevertheless left the impression that the production team have an underlying affection for Christie and her work. I initially liked the setting, the weather, the isolation, the cosiness, I guess, but it was not developed.

The acting was good especially Timothy Dalton, Zoe Telford and Mel Smith. What's the point of seeing a film of a book that you have read when you know exactly what will happen.

If you like an ensemble mystery this one is for you and again you can’t go wrong with Agatha Christie. Burnaby gets restless and takes it upon himself to make sure the Captain is well, trudging through the thick snow. Before he can accept he has something to do. Just who was it who dreamt up this dire drivel, and then had to gall to say it was based on Agatha Christie's novel "The Sittaford Mystery"? I was looking forward to a TV adaptation, even if they added Miss Marple to it. Enjoy it for what it is. That could be an interesting experience in deconstruction for, let's say, a film student thesis. Considering that he was portraying a somewhat theatrical character, it is amazing that he managed to keep his performance under control, and struck a tight balance between theatricality and subtlety. I think they must have taken the storyline to the butcher's shop! It wouldn't matter at all if the final product were good.

Sorry to disappoint those who loved this, but this is for me the worst Marple, not only because it is a travesty of an adaptation, but on its own terms I just couldn't get into it. A popular war hero who made his initial fame and fortune as an explorer and archaeologist in Egypt, he seems to have the world at his feet. Terrible - A bad adaptation of a great story, An inconsistent mystery that failed to engage me at all, Ms Christie must be spinning in her grave, Not overly engaging but still reasonably good, A dreadful cocktail of uninteresting bore. I really liked Inspector Narracott and his working style as much as I enjoyed Emily’s. Enjoy it for what it is.

But all those bodies do nothing for the real story and they eat up the cash and clutter up the screen. It is one thing to take a classic and rather clever Agatha Christie mystery and completely gut it, leaving really just the name of the characters intact. Most of the cast seek to cover their shame at being in this programme by sending it up. I feel a little embarrassed having read so many of the reviews on here which say 'have they read the book?' But it genuinely held no resemblance to the book- the settings, characters and murder were all tinkered with, and the murderer and back story utterly changed! And aside from a few first-rate performances, I was not that impressed by the majority of the cast’s acting – including, unfortunately, Geraldine McEwan’s. Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2017. But there is also British tradition of spending too much and covering up the plot with too much detail and scenery. Her blog is just an extension of that habit. The Sittaford MysteryAgatha ChristieOriginally Published 1931 My quest to read and review all of the non-series mystery and thriller novels by Agatha Christie continues this month with a look at The Sittaford Mystery. By then I had entirely lost track of who the characters were, and the confusion was deepened by abrupt flashbacks to the Egyptian tomb. Okay. Look at how many police hanging around doing nothing you see after a murder in Lewis or Midsomer Murders; compare that with the Swedish version of Wallander. Buy the book.
There were only four performances I truly enjoyed. Now maybe Sweden has fewer cops or maybe the British version is more accurate.

Unfortunately they only revealed themselves as clumsy posers to those who have read the book and mislead those who haven't into attributing the incoherent and wandering plotting to Christie herself. None of the plot, if that is the right term for it, resembles the Christie plot. There's a problem loading this menu right now. A hectic series of shots that seemed to be thrown together by a drunk infant made up this mystery story that resembled more Christie's classic play 'The Mousetrap' than the original novel. ), but personally, not having read it (in fact, not having even heard of that particular novel), I can't say I minded. I loved the snowy and secluded Sittaford background, perfect for my small town loving self. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. I can think of at least two or three Christie novels that did not feature any of these sleuths that I have read. Oh, I do love a good Agatha Christie audio! “THE SITTAFORD MYSTERY” strikes me as a rather confusing tale.

There are realistic looking Egyptian treasures, and two delightfully creaky English houses. Published in 1931, “The Sittaford Mystery” by Agatha Christie is set in the tiny, isolated village in Dartmoor. . . A middle aged MP/Government minister/War hero is on the verge of replacing Winston Churchill as Prime Minister. I want mystery, murder, and mayhem and no romance please. How did you like it? It was terrible and especially disappointing for me as "The Sittaford Mystery" is one of my favourites. I could complain about the changes made to Agatha Christie’s novel. This adaptation, like most of the ITV Marple series, makes it much more complicated. I found nothing outstanding about them. But I feel that she took the whole “verbose elderly lady” act a bit too far . Taking a nice old Agatha Christie mystery and changing the murderer and a considerable chunk of the plot is bad enough, but failing to even make the plot gripping is a dreadful crime. How did you like it? I agree with all the other comments from Christie fans. The Sittaford Mystery is one of those classic mystery stories - isolated community, a hint of the paranormal, legacies, prodigal relatives, all given a strong sense of location by being tied in with the Dartmoor landscape.

Almost all the characters have the same names as characters in a Christie book, often the book which is allegedly being adapted. At least do a decent job. When the séance predicts his death, things look bleak for Tevelyan, who finds himself surrounded by shadowy guests on all sides. I don’t think I have read this but I think I watched the tv adaptation- Christie is so good at weaving a plot. This struck me as an idiotic attempt by director Paul Unwin to channel or copy Alfred Hitchcock’s last shot of Anthony Perkins in the 1960 movie, “PYSCHO”. Pearson's fiancée, Emily Trefussis and Inspector Narracott believe Pearson to be innocent and eventually unravel the mystery of who killed him. There are realistic looking Egyptian treasures, and two delightfully creaky English houses. While I have not read the book in a while, I do agree it is a great compelling story. While liking some better than others I've not found any I disliked. Miss Marple loses.

I agree with all the other comments from Christie fans. It was the kind of old style drama that was mocked 30 years ago by Monty Python's Flying Circus and for a while I expected John Cleese to make an appearance as the Man from Scotland Yard. Gayathri loves reading, recommending books and talking about bookish things in real life. But I still cared very little for the movie. It is obvious to anyone reading this review that I did not like “THE SITTAFORD MYSTERY”. Luckily Miss Marple is on hand to solve the mystery. I did solve this one, but only by hunch. I could say the same about Rita Tushingham, who gave a nuanced performance as a mysterious woman with knowledge of an ugly part in Treveylan’s past. The previews of this movie looked interesting, so I started watching it on PBS. However, it is not long before the trio find themselves seeking Miss Marple’s help. (The producers and scriptwriters.) Does this really matter Personally I want to see something different to the book. Now maybe Sweden has fewer cops or maybe the British version is more accurate.
Carey Mulligan for some reason does not do that and gives a stunningly good performance. What I found even more unconvincing was the last shot of the murderer staring at the camera with an evil grin. But none of the characters is anything like the book. Whilst I praise the effort, and inclusion of good guest stars etc, I just didn't see why they had to change it so much. Enough of the book though, what of the TV adaptation? Sorry to disappoint those who loved this, but this is for me the worst Marple, not only because it is a travesty of an adaptation, but on its own terms I just couldn't get into it. Big word, almost. Whilst I praise the effort, and inclusion of good guest stars etc, I just didn't see why they had to change it so much.

Pearson's fiancée, Emily Trefussis and Inspector Narracott believe Pearson to be innocent and eventually unravel the mystery of who killed him. Of course the acting was decent from Robert Hardy(despite the fact his character was unnecessary), Zoe Telford, Patricia Hodge and especially Timothy Dalton. Sittaford Mystery, The: A book review.
