In 1989 the International Federation of Alternative Trade (IFAT; later renamed World Fair Trade Organization) was born, bringing together 38 fair trade organizations under one roof. Fair Trade and Fair Trade Organisations have been recognised repeatedly by European Institutions as well as national and regional governments for its contribution to poverty reduction, sustainable development and consumer awareness-raising. The movement is engaged in debates with political decision-makers in the European institutions and international fora on making international trade fairer. The WFTO Fair Trade Standard specifies criteria for assessing if an enterprise truly implements the 10 Principles of Fair Trade.
