I received these glasses for a wedding present 30 years ago. The “copita” is the classic sherry glass, and having lived in the sherry country in Andalusia for a year I became addicted to the “manzanilla de Sanlucar” type of dry sherry. Am I missing something? Jeff now relishes many types of whiskeys, ranging from the super-affordable to the super-premium and everything in between. Overall, the tasting notes were as expected. They feel really cool, very light, delicate glass. I left out taste in the comparison as it varies too much depending on the whiskey in the glass. The shape of the glass (the wide rim) causes the whisky to spill over the narrowest part of the glass. The narrowed rim Glencairn design is a result of testing conducted by master distillers of five of Scotland’s biggest distilleries. That sensation isn’t completely foreign because I occasionally sip from a Canadian Glencairn. They’re the industry standard. These Glencairn glasses are beloved by whiskey drinkers as they concentrate the aromas—something a rocks glass does not. The appearance makes the liquid appear darker which can be misleading at times as color is a sign of age in whiskey. The feel premium because of how nice they look and the weight they carry in you rhand. I have one and struggle to smell anything out of it, Glencairn is far better for nosing and tasting. Although I do not prefer to smell ethanol notes on the nose of the whiskey, others would argue that they enjoy the smell. I was not paid in any way, shape, or form for my recommendation. The Norlan glass is very easy to handle in comparison to the Glencairn. Because of this, I rate the price a 3 out 5 stars. The shape though makes the 2nd 1/2 difficult especially the very last portion. The fruit was more prominent than the Glencairn, the oak was non-existent, and the vanilla was more caramelized. In the hand, the Norlan feels much more like a tumbler and is very lightweight. This one has the advantages of the ‘Copita’ & the Glencairn, but as Jim says putting ice in it would still be tough!
Does the chemical composition effect the liquor? For this comparison, I will compare three features: Appearance, Smell, and Price to give my unbiased opinion on which glass that I prefer. Second, if he has never tried a single malt scotch then a scotch from the isle of may be too peaty/smoky for him. But please note these last two have a strong peat smoke presence to them – not for everyone. The bulb is wide enough to swirl the liquidy but narrow enough at the top to flush the whisky’s nose straight at you. Then again, branding and image is everything. That’s a very small barrier of entry. Many of these glasses claim to deliver an enhanced nosing to your bourbon, providing aromas and nuances that you would miss if consuming the whiskey with a rocks glass or tumbler. Fantastic recommendations, the Riedel XO Cognac glass sure is pricey though! Considering the Norlan glass, which is very similar, is $48.00 a pair, that’s not a bad price. A really enjoyable experience. That’s a very small barrier of entry. Because of this, I rate the price of Glencairn as a 5 out 5 stars. Nearly any of the ones on this list would be a great gift!
