I have been looking into getting a backup / second jazzy for live shows. Anyone have any recommendations? Never understood the point of a Jazzmaster with humbuckers - or active pickups for that matter - the pickups are such a critical part of the Jazzy tone.
I love the Fender's exclusion of the rhytm circuit but the chrome humbuckers look terrible to me. if you are a frequent tremolo user, the CV has a much better bridge for that. You really can't go wrong with either, but if you like the mellow rhythm circuit of a Jazzmaster, it sounds … They both sound great too. Where's the hundred bucks going? The JMJM has a P90 style pickup while the CV JM has a classic tone inspired wide wound single coil. The CV JM has a classic mustang bridge which is also fixed radius at 9.5" but slotted for each string for the vibrato. I’ve got a MIA Jaguar and I still play it frequently. Aesthetically, the guitar just looks more balanced when the tail piece is that (not even) half an inch further off to the edge of the body and do I like the idea of a bridge that rocks with the trem even if strings do pop out of their saddles occasionally. Review – Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster. New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be cast, Press J to jump to the feed. Was going to ask the exact same question.
Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster. Just as 'jazz mags' aren't really about jazz, the Fender Jazzmaster isn't strictly aimed at cappuccino-sipping noodlers in polo neck sweaters. General Trelane, Nov 7, 2013. Do you find that you have issues with it keeping tune when you use the vibrato system? Tried the JM Jazzmaster, which was okay, but suffers from the same ills that the VM Jaguar does and I definitely prefer the J Mascis Jazzmaster over the VM Jazzmaster. I have no doubt that I would be happy with just a jmjm, but I wouldn’t be happy with just a Classic vibe. Truth is, the guitar's offset design left the jazz fraternity cold on its launch at the 1958 … Satin finish and if you believe the interviews, modeled on Rory Gallaghers Strat neck.
What is the shape of it?
Yes I'm hearing a lot of love for the JMJM neck! You'll need to get your hands on both of them to decide for yourself, but I strongly recommend a shim and string gauge change for either of the two of them. I'm personally fond of the voicing, but it's different from other jazzmasters. Neck feel is probably the most important thing to me but I do prefer the more vintage style bridge and trem system on the Classic Vibe JM. I've decided to go with the sunburst classic vibe and will get a J Mascis one later.
finishes, fretwork, attention to detail, paintjob, components quality, solid assembly...) but that they are just different insteuments? Best of both worlds! So unless somebody can tell me that the body on the JMJM is more solid or somehow better quality than the CVJM body I might actually buy a CV and swap the neck out for a JM neck. I'm asking because I may buy a CV and swap out the neck for a JMJM neck. It's my favorite :D. I’ve had both, currently have the jmjm, genuinely think the jmjm is significantly better.
Likewise I don't see NOT having a rhythm circuit as a feature, even if like most people you never use it. JMJM is legit. Very stoked on it. Only reason I would like one without rhytm circuit is because its less cablework, less things to break down before/during a gig.Since my rhytme circuit 'fell into' my body once. Plus it's cheaper than buying the JM and replacing the pickguard to a tortoiseshell one and changing the P90s a to more jazzmaster-esque set of pickups and still not having my preferred trem/bridge combo. The neck on the Mascis is one of the best necks I've ever played, hands down.
edited 1 year ago. Oct 5, 2013 California. Yeah that’s kinda how I feel about it, like if I’m gonna get a jazzmaster might as well go all out on its unique design features right?
I don’t have any experience with CV but just wanted to express my satisfaction with the j mascis.
The neck of the J Mascis appeals to me more than the CV but the bridge and tremolo system of the CV beats the JM. Have you tried Jag-Stang neck? But I am a big fan of this guitar. I realise that they're two very different sounding guitars but at this price point I'm much more concerned about the QUALITY … I'm not too fussed about the difference in pick ups tone since I can always change those to better suit my preferences if need be. This will be my first offset and the way the 60s classic vibe one looks reminds me of the one J used to play in early dino jr and the ones Kevin Shields/Bilinda Butcher played in mbv. How do the Classic Vibe and J Mascis compare quality-wise? How so? I realise that they're two very different sounding guitars but at this price point I'm much more concerned about the QUALITY and FEEL of a guitar.
Can anybody confirm this?
Also, I've heard some people say the Mascis has a thicker neck but I can't find any specs showing that. After owning both, the CVJM definitely sounds more in line with a traditional JM and I prefer that...however, the neck on the JMJM is amazing! The jmjm bridge is a tune o matic which is sharper on the strings and doesn’t return to tune as well. The jmjm is a quality instrument. The rhythm circuit epitomizes a Jazzmaster's tone, in my opinion. So I've decided that I want a Jazzmaster but I'm having a tough time deciding between the Squier Classic Vibe 60s Jazzmaster and the Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster. Classic Vibe. How do you feel the tremolo/bridge on you jag compares to the one of the JMJM? Thanks, Yeah the neck is by far the biggest pro for the JMJM to me. I would suggest the J Mascis Jazzmaster for you. And it’s no wonder – at around $450, it’s not exactly cheap for a Squier. Also afraid it will sound very different from my first jazzmaster. General Trelane Squier Talker. Yeah I’m also leaning toward the CV, though I’m really digging the sonic blue one rn! The ones with the short trem placement are inferior in my view, in terms of feel. What the two of these come down to is 3 very specific points.
Wondering what thoughts you guys might have on the two of them?
Same with the tune-o-matics.
This will be my first offset and the way the 60s classic vibe one looks reminds me of the one J used to play in early dino jr and the ones Kevin Shields/Bilinda Butcher played in mbv. If you go with the JMJM, get a roller bridge TOM. I’m mainly curious about the pros and cons of their different bridges and trem placements. Yeah the TOM bridge is one of my main concerns with the JMJM. Classic sunburst 60s jazzmasters for a great price. The neck on the Mascis is one of the best necks I've ever played, hands down.
I have been looking into getting a backup / second jazzy for live shows. And I also like the pickups, it’s really just the bridge/tremolo that I’m not crazy about, Love Mexican fenders but honestly none of the Mexican jazzmasters really appeal to me before getting into the $1000 range and that’s a bit more of an investment than I can make in a guitar rn. My eye was on the Squier classic vibe but I recently saw a Fender standard HH used going for the same price. The neck on the jmjm is good.
J Mascis rules though! I got a vmjm a couple of weeks ago, and as nice as of a guitar it is, I can't get used to the heftier necks! Are there any JM models that have a slimmer neck? What is on the Mascis that's worth a hundred more dollars? The JMJM has a TOM style bridge with a 12" fixed radius, giving a rather (imo) razor like edge on roundwound strings. Press J to jump to the feed. I think it has a stronger neck and neck/middle tone. J Mascis rules though! Also afraid it will sound very different from my first … Extra question: could the pickups be replaced with an added Jazzmaster cover? The Tele has a good bridge pickup, but the neck is kinda muddy and non-descript.
