There are already numerous extended obituaries of Stephen, and I won’t attempt one here (see for example the fine obituaries by Dennis Overbye in the New York Times and by Roger Penrose in the Guardian). Watch for the CQG Highlights brochure at your next conference. The typical rationalisation of the area result is that black holes are special objects because, by definition, they possess a horizon. To test these assumptions, approaches are needed, which work in a model-independent way.
